Auto Repair in Yreka,CA

If you drive north on Interstate 5, you’ll pass through Yreka, CA, shortly before reaching Oregon. Yreka sprang up in a very short time during the 1850s, when gold was discovered there by Abraham Thompson. The gold rush saw the community given several different names until Yreka finally stuck. Now, around 7,700 people live in this historic community.

The name Yreka comes from the original Shasta language meaning north mountain, or white mountain. However, Mark Twain tells a different story in his autobiography, weaving a tale about a bakery sign that was read backward, with the ‘b’ covered, by a new arrival. While ‘akery’ is Yreka spelled backward, it’s probably the Shasta word that truly stands as the town name’s origin.

You can discover many historical sites in Yreka, all preserved from the Gold Rush days. In fact, Yreka’s West Miner Street is a designated historical place in itself, while you can view artifacts at the Siskiyou County Museum. The adventurous type can head out for a hike up Mt. Shasta, visible from Yreka.
