Just east of Redding, CA in Shasta County sits the town of Palo Cedro. It’s a small census-designated place that only 1,300 people call home. Palo Cedro has become a slightly upscale area, mainly a bedroom community in a rural environment.
Palo Cedro has been around for more than 130 years, first called Albertson and then Roberts, before ‘Palo Cedro’ stuck. As the name literally means ‘cedar tree’, it comes as no surprise that Palo Cedro was named after a notable local tree. That tree was since cut down, but the name remained.
Perhaps Palo Cedro’s best claim to fame comes in the form of a music icon. The late Merle Haggard owned and lived on a ranch in Palo Cedro until his passing in 2016. Notable cultural influences are found in the local cuisine, from the Fresh Fire Grill’s Asian Fusion dining, to the Mexican flair of Ortegas’ Restaurant.
